A gift that will last well
beyond the holiday season

“When you go down there, you see what the people are having to deal with, with a contaminated water supply and the sickness due to a lack thereof. Then you see the joy in their faces as you turn over an adequate, safe water supply. The appreciation is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.”
- Steve Cawood

After celebrating our 75 years, we reflected a lot on our roots and how we got where we are today. Our foundation rests on the shoulders of those before us, who were dedicated to serving others and to making communities better.

As we’ve grown, we feel an increased responsibility to expand our impact and leave an even greater legacy of good. This year, we’re embracing the spirit of giving with a gift that will last well beyond the holiday season.

For several years, we’ve partnered with Jaime Torres and his team to provide communities in Guatemala with one of the most basic human needs – access to clean water.

We’ve had the opportunity to take our mission of building communities global through four well-drilling trips dating back to the first one initiated and led by Steve Cawood in 2015.

This year, we’re excited to celebrate the holiday season and the “spirit of giving” by funding two wells in Guatemala, the first of which will be drilled by a GMC team in February 2024.

Six GMC employees traveled to Guatemala in February 2024 to continue GMC’s mission of “building communities,” serving with Asociación Pozos Agua Viva (ASOCAVIVA). The best way to understand the process, purpose and power of this trip is to hear from those who served on it.

In September 2022, eight GMC employees traveled to Guatemala to take our “building communities” mission international. The team partnered with Asociación Pozos Agua Viva (ASOCAVIVA), an organization led by Jaime Torres that provides safe drinking water to remote areas in Guatemala. This year, the team worked in a remote village in the eastern region of Guatemala. Rainy season lasts from May until October in Guatemala, so the team was faced with several challenges not only drilling the well itself, but also getting to the village. Because of the immense amounts of rain, the concrete bridge connecting to the village had been washed away, and the river had flooded the area. With the rain not letting up any time soon, the only option was to cross through the river itself.

In April 2021, several of GMC’s team members took our “building communities” mission international. The group traveled to Guatemala with Asociación Pozos Agua Viva, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing safe drinking water to remote areas in Guatemala. Their goal for this trip was to drill a water well in the remote indigenous Mayan village of Mam Cajolá. The village, which was established three years ago, is home to approximately 265 families with a total population of almost 800. They had no electricity, and their only source of water was hand-dug, shallow wells that were easily contaminated.

In addition to completing the well-drilling project, the team spent time educating women and children on the importance of personal hygiene, food preparation and safety and home remedies for ailments caused by unsafe drinking water through crafts and Bible stories, as well as classes held near the drilling site. Through these efforts, CWS and GMC hope to help reduce the number of deaths caused by water-related diseases each year and provide a better quality of life for the people in developing nations.
